Joe Belfiore responds to update criticism

Lots of folks may exist upset with Microsoft and the update procedure (we're getting a little tired of the drama ourselves) but yous have to give them credit: they're listening and trying to make things right. You may not similar their response, just at least they're giving a response.

To recap: this week nosotros saw the beginning of the NoDo update, then came the outrage that information technology could have "weeks" to become it people, then Microsoft gave u.s.a. a way to check our update status. Last night on Microsoft's Channel nine, Joe Belfiore gave a cheery interview which though entertaining, didn't reveal as well much. However, lots of people were miffed to see him saying things were going well and appearing a bit out of touch.

Fast forrad 24 hours and he's responding to the criticism, which like we said to a higher place, is good damage command. The message, re-posted in its entirety after the break, is quite forthcoming and sincere. A lot tin exist said about the update process but we practise appreciate Microsoft's position in trying to reach out to consumers and developers alike. Like before, sound of in comments on your thoughts.

Many of you lot are making critical comments here which are certainly off-white. First, I was incorrect when I said "most people take received the February update." There are many of you lot who have however to receive information technology, and I don't blame you for speaking up and pointing out my error. 2d, I referred to our updates equally "complete" because I was thinking of the internal process where nosotros pass completed software to another group who delivers them – but of course no update is complete until yous all accept information technology. Plus, at the time I did the interview nosotros had started the NoDo ("march update") delivery procedure and I knew "it was going well" from our perspective: people were officially getting it, the success rate of its deployment on real-world phones was looking good, and we were happy that the process had STARTED well. Withal—these are NOT the same as all of you getting it and I'm sorry that I came across as insensitive to that fact.

I am a very, very big abet for all our end-users and developers, and it bothers me a lot if I sounded out of bear upon. I wasn't as prepared for this interview as I should accept been—I walked into the studio with an informal country of mind, thinking about MIX and what we WILL be talking about, and I didn't have the right upwardly-to-date information to give a expert explanation on updates which I know to be a very high-interest topic right at present.

I take read all of the comments here (and many of them on the other blogs) and so has pretty much everyone in our direction team. Nosotros know it'due south been frustrating to expect for features/fixes and (probably worse) to hear little from us on specific dates. We are deplorable the process has been rocky. The "where's my telephone update" table is our first step to try to remedy this in the confront of technical bug that have fabricated our first wave of updates take longer than nosotros expected. We know the table would benefit profoundly from more detail, and we are hoping to add more to information technology by working with the Operators who own the "testing" phase to become more than clarity. If your phone is shown in "scheduling", it'll exist worth checking the tabular array next calendar week.

In the spirit of "MIX as a conversation" – I will brand sure that when I bear witness up in Vegas that I'm well prepared to give an update in person and to try to answer your questions every bit best I tin can. You folks are plain a very of import audition for u.s.a. and it'south right for you to look united states to communicate and execute better. I know at this point it's our deportment that matter… The master affair we are trying to do is to go the updates out to everyone in a way that is reliable and works, and and so make our process better and more transparent in the future.

Thanks,

Joe
